Come Thou Fount

I have never been able to sing the 2nd half of the 2nd verse of "Come Thou Fount." I try every time, but nothing comes out.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wand'ring from the folds of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Bought me with His precious blood.

I have no voice until I recover at the start of verse 3, but then it's gone again when we sing,

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, O take and seal it;
Seal it for thy courts above.

And then the song is over and it's time to mop up. What song 'goes right through' you?

  1. Definitely "Come Thou Fount".
    Steve Camp's "He Covers Me".
    A few from Rich Mullins: "The Love of God" - I can only just barely, and not always, get all the way through this one..."The Howling" - just the poetry in this song breaks me down. . . "Growing Young" - beautiful.
    Phil Keaggy - "Under The Grace" and "Maker of the Universe"
    "All the Way My Savior Leads Me"...

  2. A McDonald's double quarter-pounder...oh, wrong subject.

    "Blessed Assurance" has done it for me on occasion.

  3. oh man... many will bring my to a painful silent ache in my throat... but this is one that rings on and on... 'bought me'. 'wandering' is a euphemism for rebellious hatred. Yet He loved, He died and He saved me... after 40+ years in the chruch. Glory to God!

  5. Had a typo in my first comment post - sorry! Here is my comment: I praise God that you are such a brother that is moved by this song. (And you other brothers who commented as well - loved the quarter pounder comment by the way!) Robertson himself did not always seem to enjoy this blessing. A story is told of Robertson (later in life) hearing a woman singing "Come Thou Fount" in a coach he was sharing with her, and she asked him what he thought of it, and he sadly replied: "Madam, I am the poor unhappy man who wrote that hymn many years ago, and I would give a thousand worlds, if I had them, to enjoy the feelings I had then." But I am not sure if this story is true or not. David Larsen has some interesting things to say about his life in his book: In the Company of Preachers (great book by the way - also In the Company of the Creative). Anyway - all that to say, your article and the comments that followed reminded me how dependent we are on the Holy Spirit for feelings like these - it is such a blessing to see Him moving in this way in our lives. I praise God for that this morning! May it ever be! Blessings!
