Book Roundup 2011

It's year-end-roundup time, and the blogosphere feels different for a week or so. We give our "funniest posts roundup," our "most popular posts," our thoughts on the turn of the year and......*pensive pause*   ha! you thought I was going to give you my list of books I read this year, didn't you! Nope, I'm turning the tables....you tell me what books you read this year instead! Thanks to The Blainemonster for the idea. I'm always nervous about asking people to comment though...what if they don't? I'll feel silly gosh darn it. At least you'll comment, Blaine....won't you?

  2. I'm here! I'm here! :)

This is so funny because when I started to look through my books....I couldn't remember when I had read what! So what follows is my best guess for 2011...

    In no particular order:
    Finally Alive by John Piper
What Is The Gospel by Greg Gilbert
Marks Of The Messenger by J. Mack Stiles
The Priority Of Preaching by Christopher Ash
The World Tilting Gospel by Dan Phillips (nearly finished)
Why God Won't Go Away by Alister McGrath (almost finished..lost it halfway through..found it again recently lol)
    The Valley of Vision (excerpts)
(Not a stinker in the bunch above. Solid stuff.)

No Shortcuts To The Top by Ed Viesturs
The Will To Climb by Ed Viesturs
Touching The Void by Joe Simpson
Annapurna by Maurice Herzog (only just begun)
Three Weeks With My Brother by Nicholas Sparks
(All the above are autobiographical in nature, the first four about mountain climbing! The one by Sparks is really neat.)

Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton
(Fiction, classic, beautiful...set in South Africa, mid 20th century)

I think that's a fairly accurate list. Books are such a blessing. Gave my boys books for Christmas: To Kill A Mockingbird, Kon Tiki, The Magician's Nephew, The Kid Who Climbed Everest. Gotta look up that Lincoln book you mentioned!

  3. Carol, you're naughty,a nd now I'm expecting a very full and detailed list of your books AND your husband's and your kids' too!

Blaine, I knew you'd come through for me! Interesting list and I only knew a few authors. Piper and McGrath and the Valley of vision.

I got the Lincoln book at the Gettysburg museum. It's a little thing but I like it. Plus, it has a faux-leather cover and it's tan which makes it epic.

I'm currently reading "The Call of a Coward" by my past co-worker Marcia Moston. It's about her experiences as a missionary in Guatemala and in it she is quite honest and transparent about her fears and anxieties about going (hence the title). I'll probably write about it more in the future - once it hits Amazon.com in 2012 and I'll give a link.

  4. Ok, some of these I have not finished, or am enjoying in pieces-parts. Others I did read.
Praying God's Word - Beth Moore
    Jesus Calling - Sarah Young
various TinTin comics or "graphic novels" including the Secret of the Unicorn
    War Horse - Michael Morpurgo
Once Upon a Town - Bob Greene
The book of Luke, in the middle of Revelation
The Chicken's Guide to Talking Turkey with your Kids about Sex - Kevin Leman
Quiet Moments with God - Lloyd John Ogilvie
Have a New Kid by Friday - Kevin Leman
Heaven is for Real - Burpo (I love his name!)
Just So Stories - Rudyard Kipling
One Thousand Gifts - Ann VosKamp

That's all for me, aside from every Reminisce Magazine all year, too. I read a lot with the girls - am catching up on a lot I missed when I was young. Do you really want me to list all those, and Jonathan's as well? :D

  5. Haha thanks Carol. No, you don't have to list Jonathan's and the kids I was just be fresh back atcha. Though I'd love to know Jonathan's - I know he's a prolific reader.

Daniel read all the Tin Tin's when he was little, so we can't wait to see the movie - heard it is spectacular. Want to see "Warhorse" too...was the book good?

I wonder if you might comment sometime (on your own blog perhaps) on "One Thousand Gifts?" I've heard some interesting things about it.

Anyway, thanks for the list :)

  6. I am currently in Ch. 5 of 1000 gifts and loving it so far! She has a unique writing style you have to get used to. But her concept of living in thankfulness is certainly life-changing. It's all about perspective. I just started my notebook, and it feels like a game!! And ch. 5 delves into grace in the darkness. That's what it's all about, really. In the good times it's easy to be thankful...

did you get your package? :D
